Niger, FG Partner to Boost Sugar Self-Sufficiency

1 min read

Abuja, Nigeria – The Niger State Government has joined forces with the Federal Government in a new initiative to achieve sugar self-sufficiency, positioning the commodity as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s food sovereignty and economic growth agenda.

Through its Foods Security System and Logistics Company, Niger State signed a strategic partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to expand domestic sugar production. The agreement was sealed at a high-level meeting attended by Agriculture Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of State Senator Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, Niger Foods Chairman Sammy Adigun, and senior ministry officials.

The collaboration underscores Nigeria’s determination to reduce reliance on sugar imports, a sector long viewed as a drain on foreign exchange. Officials said the initiative will focus on scaling up local production capacity, strengthening value chains, and integrating modern logistics to ensure efficiency.

“This partnership is not only about agriculture; it is about sustainability, national security, and economic resilience,” one senior official noted, stressing that sugar production can generate significant employment opportunities while stabilizing prices in the long term.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the deal would accelerate job creation, attract private sector participation, and advance the federal vision that Niger State will play a leading role in feeding the nation. By prioritizing sugar self-sufficiency, both governments seek to align Nigeria’s agricultural strategy with global food security standards while reducing the fiscal burden of imports.

Analysts highlight that Nigeria’s annual sugar demand exceeds 1.5 million metric tonnes, much of which is currently imported. The Niger-FG pact is therefore expected to be a pivotal step toward bridging this gap and positioning the country for greater self-reliance in a critical sector.
