Abuja, Nigeria – The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has introduced more than 200 improved crop varieties in collaboration with Nigerian research institutions and international partners, aiming to strengthen food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Simeon Ehui, Director-General of IITA and Regional Director for Continental Africa at CGIAR, announced the milestone during the 3rd International Conference of the Nigerian Plant Breeders Association (NPBA) in Abuja. The event, themed “Crop Improvement for Food Security, Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Environment,” brought together plant breeders, researchers, and scientists from across Africa.
Ehui praised the dedication of plant breeders while stressing the urgency of new innovations to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and nutritional needs. “Crops must be developed to withstand heat, drought, salinity, and emerging pests. This is not just science, it is survival,” he said.
The initiative goes beyond quantity to quality, with breeding efforts targeting improved nutrition and diet diversity. “We must not only produce more food, but also produce better food that nourishes, diversifies diets, and empowers smallholder farmers, especially women and youths,” Ehui emphasized.
The IITA has also nurtured future scientists through its International Association of Research Scholars and Fellows (IARSAF) platform, supporting the next generation of crop improvement specialists. Collaboration remains central, with Ehui urging stronger links between plant health, nutrition, climate adaptation, markets, and social science. He further called for private sector involvement to ensure innovations reach farmers and markets effectively.
“Plant breeding is about the farmer in a drought-prone village, the child who needs a nutritious meal, and the young breeder who will carry this work forward. Every seed we improve carries the promise of a better life for someone, somewhere,” he said.
Ehui underscored the transformative potential of genomics, CRISPR editing, biotechnology, and precision phenotyping, which are reshaping crop development. Advances in biofortification have already delivered varieties enriched with vitamins and minerals, combating hidden hunger across vulnerable populations.
He noted that improved seed systems remain crucial to ensuring farmers receive clean, high-quality seeds when needed. These efforts, he added, symbolize how innovation in plant breeding directly translates into innovation for humanity.
Stakeholders at the conference pledged to sustain momentum, envisioning a future where no farmer fears a failed harvest and no community is left behind. “Together, we can turn dreams into seeds and those seeds into solutions,” Ehui concluded.
