Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri has lauded the Super Eagles of Nigeria after their commanding 2‑0 quarterfinal win over Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria booked their semifinal place at AFCON 2025 thanks to a strong performance against the Fennec Foxes on Saturday. The Super Eagles dominated from start to finish, dismissing pre‑match talk that Algeria — known for a tight defence prior to the game — would present a stern test.

Before the match, Algeria, coached by Vladimir Petković, had conceded just one goal in four games, making them one of the best defensive sides in the tournament. Despite this, Eric Chelle’s Nigeria side put together a thoroughly impressive display.

Statistically, Nigeria controlled the game with 57% possession and an expected goals (xG) of 3.36, compared with Algeria’s 0.13 xG. Remarkably, Algeria registered zero xG in the first half, only managing three overall attempts compared to Nigeria’s 13. The Fennec Foxes had a mere 10 touches inside Nigeria’s penalty area, while the Super Eagles enjoyed 41 in Algeria’s box. Had they been more clinical, Nigeria could easily have finished with even more goals in Marrakech.

Samir Nasri Praises Super Eagles

After Nigeria’s impressive win, Samir Nasri — who represented France internationally but is of Algerian descent — took to social media to applaud the Super Eagles’ performance, acknowledging their quality in both athleticism and tactical execution.

On his X page, Nasri wrote:

“Bravo to the Nigerian team, very impressive in terms of physical athleticism and tactical play. Well deserved based on the content of the match.”

Despite his Algerian heritage, the former French international could not overlook Nigeria’s dominant display.

Nigeria’s Next Challenge

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles face a tough semifinal showdown against tournament hosts Morocco. It is set to be their sternest test yet at AFCON 2025, but Nigeria’s form and confidence suggest they are ready for the challenge.

With momentum on their side and a performance that earned praise from one of Africa’s well‑known football figures, Nigeria will be aiming to go all the way in Morocco.
