Anambra drug bust operations have resulted in the destruction of illicit drugs valued at about ₦50 million and the arrest of several suspects during coordinated raids across Awka and nearby communities. The enforcement exercise, carried out by the Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), followed intelligence reports on illegal drug activities within the state capital and its environs.
The Managing Director of SASA, Monday Nwokoye, disclosed the development on Saturday while addressing journalists during the operation. He said all suspects arrested had been handed over to officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
According to Nwokoye, the operation demonstrates the agency’s determination to eliminate drug abuse, touting and other forms of criminality in Anambra State. He added that intelligence gathering remains central to the agency’s enforcement strategy.
Anambra drug bust targets illegal drug networks
Nwokoye explained that the raids were carried out after security operatives received credible intelligence about suspected drug distribution points operating in Awka and surrounding communities.
Consequently, SASA officers launched coordinated operations that led to the recovery of large quantities of prohibited substances. The agency described the exercise as a major success in its ongoing campaign against organised crime.
Furthermore, Nwokoye warned individuals involved in drug trafficking to abandon the illegal trade or face severe legal consequences. He stressed that the agency would sustain intelligence-led operations across the state.
Anambra drug bust destroys drugs worth ₦50m
During the operation, officers recovered and destroyed illicit drugs estimated to be worth about ₦50 million.
According to SASA, the seized substances included cocaine, Ghanaian loud, tramadol, cannabis sativa, mkpulu mmiri and several other prohibited drugs.
Nwokoye said the agency deliberately destroyed the drugs to prevent them from returning to circulation. He noted that allowing the substances to remain in storage could create opportunities for diversion or theft.
The agency reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on illicit drugs, saying the exercise reflects its commitment to protecting communities from the dangers associated with substance abuse.
Suspects transferred to NDLEA
The Anambra drug bust also led to the arrest of several individuals allegedly involved in the illegal drug business.
Nwokoye confirmed that all suspects were transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation. He explained that the NDLEA would determine the next legal steps after completing its inquiries.
In addition, he said cooperation between SASA and the NDLEA has strengthened efforts to combat drug trafficking and related offences throughout Anambra State.
Officials expressed confidence that continued collaboration among security agencies would improve intelligence sharing and increase successful prosecutions.
Government backs sustained enforcement
Nwokoye commended Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the agency’s activities through improved logistics and operational backing.
According to him, the state government remains committed to removing illicit drugs, touting and criminal elements from communities across Anambra.
He added that the availability of illegal drugs often contributes to violent crimes, robbery and other security challenges. Therefore, sustained enforcement remains necessary to reduce criminal activities.
The agency pledged to continue identifying and dismantling drug distribution networks wherever they operate.

Nwokoye urged residents to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods.
He said timely intelligence from members of the public often enables security operatives to prevent crimes before they occur. Likewise, community cooperation helps authorities identify illegal drug markets and arrest offenders.
The SASA boss assured residents that information received would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.
He also promised that the agency would continue discharging its responsibilities without fear or favour. According to him, the ultimate goal is to build a safer, healthier and more secure Anambra State.
