The Monday sit-at-home defiance has prompted a strong response from Anambra State. Governor Chukwuma Soludo recently ordered a one-week closure of Onitsha Main Market after traders failed to open their stalls on Monday—despite clear government instructions to resume normal business.
During an on-site visit, Soludo described the empty market as “economic sabotage.” He warned that if traders don’t comply soon, the shutdown could extend to one month. Moreover, security forces—including police and army units—have already sealed the market to enforce the order.
This move is part of a broader effort to end the weekly Monday shutdowns that have affected the South-East for months. For a long time, the state has urged citizens to return to work every Monday. After all, these closures hurt livelihoods, reduce tax revenue, and worsen economic instability. Yet, fear and social pressure have kept many businesses closed.
Governor Soludo said the silence spoke volumes. “Despite our security guarantees and repeated appeals to reclaim public life, traders chose absence over commerce,” he explained. “That’s not just passive—it’s active resistance that undermines public safety and recovery.”
He added firmly, “We won’t allow a few to hold the economy hostage. This closure protects law-abiding citizens.” Furthermore, he issued a clear ultimatum: “Trade here—or go elsewhere. I’m serious.”
To reinforce this stance, the state is also adjusting civil service pay. Starting February 2026, salaries will reflect actual attendance—including Mondays. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, confirmed this during a briefing in Awka. The decision came from the Executive Council’s recent retreat, which also outlined priorities for the new administration term beginning March 17, 2026.
Taken together, these steps show a coordinated plan to break the cycle of Monday sit-at-home defiance. The goal isn’t just to reopen markets—it’s to restore confidence, routine, and economic rhythm across Anambra.
Next Monday will be the real test. When the market reopens, will traders return in full force? Or will empty aisles signal continued resistance? Either way, the outcome matters greatly. In fact, it could shape how Anambra manages public order and economic life for months to come.
