NNPP Reacts to Abba Yusuf’s Resignation, Warns of Betrayal

NNPP condemns Abba Yusuf’s defection to the APC, asserting the Kano political structure remains intact ahead of the 2027 elections, despite the governor’s move.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has strongly condemned the resignation of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf from the party, warning that his planned defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would be seen as a betrayal of the mandate given to him by the people of Kano. The party, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, emphasized that Yusuf’s exit would not alter the political dynamics of Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections. NNPP officials are confident that despite the governor’s departure, they will retain the loyalty and support of the masses in the state, with or without Yusuf.

According to Johnson, Abba Yusuf’s decision to rejoin the APC, a party that Kano voters had already rejected at the polls, equates to “freely handing over” the people’s mandate to the very political party that was not favored in the election. The NNPP remains resolute, asserting that it will continue to enjoy the support of the people in Kano, who they believe are the true drivers of political power.

Strength of NNPP’s Grassroots Support in Kano

The NNPP’s strength in Kano, according to the party, lies in its grassroots support rather than political figures. Johnson pointed out that in previous elections, the NNPP had performed well even without holding any elected positions. He recalled the party’s success in the 2019 and 2023 elections, where the party emerged victorious in Kano despite lacking elected representatives in key government positions.

“In 2019, without a single elected executive or legislative officer, we believed we won Kano squarely. In 2023, we were in the same position, yet Abba Yusuf became governor through the votes of the masses. That shows where the real power lies,” Johnson emphasized, underscoring that the real strength of the NNPP is the unwavering support from the people.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, which played a major role in the party’s 2023 electoral success, remains firmly aligned with the NNPP, further solidifying the party’s foundation in the state. Despite Yusuf’s defection, NNPP officials assert that the grassroots loyalty and ideological foundation of the Kwankwasiyya Movement will not falter.

Rabiu Kwankwaso Calls for Preparation for 2027 Elections

In light of the political developments, NNPP national leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has urged the party’s members and supporters to begin preparing for the 2027 general elections. Speaking to party leaders and supporters, Kwankwaso commended those who have remained loyal to the party’s cause, emphasizing the importance of continued commitment to the party’s ideals. He encouraged members to stay united, even as political alignments continue to shift.

“Given the current political situation in Kano, we must get ready for 2027, mobilise our supporters, and deliver votes in every ward,” Kwankwaso urged, stressing the importance of grassroots mobilization. He also reassured loyal members that their ideological commitment was stronger than any financial inducements that may attempt to sway them.

Details of Abba Yusuf’s Resignation and Defection

Abba Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP was formally communicated in a letter dated January 23, 2026, addressed to the NNPP chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area. In the letter, Yusuf cited unresolved leadership crises and ongoing legal battles within the party as reasons for his departure. He expressed his gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunity but indicated that he could no longer continue his membership.

The governor’s defection was further confirmed by sources within the APC, who revealed plans for his formal reception into the party. The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, had reportedly directed arrangements for Yusuf’s registration, alongside the support of several other political figures.

However, there has been speculation about whether the deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, will follow Yusuf in defecting to the APC. As of now, Gwarzo has not made any public moves toward joining the APC.

Implications for Kano’s Political Future

Abba Yusuf’s defection marks a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape. While his move may be seen as a blow to the NNPP, the party remains confident in its ability to retain control of the state. The party continues to emphasize that its political structure in Kano is not dependent on any single individual, but rather on the collective support of the people. The Kwankwasiyya Movement and the NNPP’s grassroots networks remain integral to the party’s strength.

As political alignments in Kano continue to evolve, the NNPP’s ability to maintain and grow its support base will be key to its prospects in the upcoming 2027 elections. The party’s continued focus on the needs of the people, rather than individual political figures, is likely to be a central theme as the political landscape in the state undergoes changes.

US Speculation and International Attention

In light of the internal political developments, some observers have noted the increasing international interest in the shifting alliances within Kano State. However, the focus for the NNPP remains firmly on local and regional factors that shape its future. The upcoming 2027 general elections will likely serve as a test of the party’s ability to mobilize and consolidate support, regardless of the defections and political realignments occurring at the national level.

As Nigeria approaches another major election cycle, the political dynamics in Kano State will be closely watched, with both local and national implications for the future of the NNPP and its role in the broader Nigerian political landscape.
